Brompton vs Novastar is not a specs-comparison decision. It is a budget-to-expectations decision. Brompton Tessera is the standard on major concert tours for a reason. Novastar handles 80% of the same functionality at 30% of the processor cost. Here is what actually differs on a show site — and which controller your rental inventory should ship with.
- Brompton is the production designer’s choice — HDR, per-pixel calibration, frame remapping, seamless failover. If your client contract names Brompton, you are buying Brompton. The decision is made for you.
- Novastar handles per-pixel calibration, 4K scaling, and input switching at roughly 30% of the Brompton processor cost. It is the rational choice for corporate events, churches, and mid-tier touring where no one specified a processor brand.
- In the DOIT VISION rental range, only Matrix 500 P2.6 ships with Brompton compatibility. X-1000 is Novastar only. Lite and Flex are Novastar or Colorlight. Your controller choice constrains your product choice — or the other way around.
- The actual show-day difference is in three things: failover behaviour, colour pipeline, and who can operate it. Spec sheets cover none of these well.

When Brompton Tessera Is the Right Choice
Bromptona Tessery is not a “nice to have.” In certain applications it is the only processor that works — and production designers will not accept a substitute. Here are the situations where the decision is already made.
1. The production rider specifies Brompton
Major concert tours, broadcast productions, and high-end corporate events often specify Brompton by name in the technical rider. If the rider says Brompton, you cannot pitch Novastar as an alternative — the production designer has built their entire signal chain and colour pipeline around Brompton’s capabilities. Submitting a Novastar quote for a Brompton-specified show will lose the contract.
2. xR and virtual production
Brompton’s genlock, sub-1-frame latency, and PureTone colour pipeline are table stakes for xR and virtual production stages. The camera sees things the human eye cannot — moiré patterns, frame tears, colour shifts under fast camera movement. Brompton handles these. Novastar’s A10 Pro approaches this capability but is not yet the production standard for high-end virtual production.
3. Seamless live input failover is non-negotiable
On a live broadcast or a concert IMAG feed, a visible glitch during input switching is unacceptable. Brompton’s failover between primary and backup inputs is genuinely seamless — no frame drop, no colour shift, no visible artefact. Novastar’s failover is functional but can produce a brief blink on some hardware combinations. If your show cannot tolerate any visible disruption during signal switching, Brompton is the answer.
Brompton uses proprietary receiving cards. Once you commit to Brompton as your processor, your LED panels must ship with Brompton-compatible receiving cards. You cannot switch a Brompton-configured panel to Novastar without replacing the receiving cards — which means opening every cabinet. Your controller choice locks in your panel procurement. Plan this decision at the quoting stage, not the delivery stage.
When Novastar Is the Smarter Buy
For 80% of rental applications — corporate events, houses of worship, mid-tier touring, conference dry-hire — NovaStar delivers the functionality you actually need at a processor cost that leaves budget for more panels, better flight cases, or a larger spare parts pool.
1. No one specified a controller brand
Most corporate events, church installations, and conference gigs do not specify a processor. The client cares that the screen is bright, uniform, and shows the right content. Novastar A8s or A10 Pro handles this without issue. Spending 3× on a Brompton processor that no one asked for and no one will notice is not a business decision — it is an emotional one.
2. You need a larger operator pool
Novastar is the most widely used LED processor globally. Finding a freelance operator who knows Novastar software in any major city is straightforward. Finding a Brompton-certified operator may take more lead time and cost more. If your business model involves sending out dry-hire panels with the client’s own crew, Novastar’s wider operator pool is a practical advantage.
3. You are building a mixed inventory across multiple product lines
X-1000 is Novastar only. Lite and Flex are Novastar or Colorlight. If your rental inventory spans multiple DOIT VISION product lines and you want one processor ecosystem, Novastar is the common denominator. Brompton locks you into Matrix 500 P2.6 as your only compatible panel.
A Brompton SX40 processor with Tessera receiving cards across a 50sqm wall can cost as much as an additional 15–20 square metres of LED panels at the Novastar equivalent. For a rental company building its first inventory, that budget trade-off is often the decision: more panels and Novastar, or fewer panels and Brompton.
The Three Things That Actually Differ on Show Day
Spec sheets list features. Here is what the operator actually notices when running one versus the other during a live show.
1. Failover behaviour
This is the single biggest operational difference. With Brompton, if the primary input cable is disconnected mid-show, the screen does not blink — it continues displaying the backup feed with zero visible interruption. With Novastar, failover works but there is typically a brief black frame or colour flash during the switch — roughly 0.5–1 second depending on the hardware configuration. For an IMAG feed at a live concert, that half-second matters. For a PowerPoint slide at a corporate conference, nobody sees it.
2. Colour pipeline and on-screen adjustment
Brompton’s OSCA (On-Screen Colour Adjustment) lets the operator adjust colour parameters while looking at the screen — not at a laptop buried in a flight case backstage. The feedback loop is immediate. Novastar’s NovaLCT software is fully featured but the workflow is less immediate — you adjust, then look up to check the result. For a one-off corporate event, this is irrelevant. For a show where the lighting designer changes the stage wash between songs, OSCA saves minutes every time.
3. Operator familiarity and troubleshooting speed
A Novastar operator who has done 200 corporate gigs will troubleshoot a Novastar signal issue faster than a Brompton specialist facing the same problem on a Novastar system. The reverse is true on a concert tour. The best controller is the one your crew already knows. If your touring crew has always run Novastar, switching to Brompton means training time and show-day risk during the transition.
“Your rental clients do not care which processor is in the rack. They care that the screen is uniform, the content is sharp, and nothing goes wrong during the keynote or the headline set. Pick the processor that makes those three things most likely — given your crew, your panels, and your typical gigs.”
DOIT VISION Rental LED: Controller Compatibility Matrix
Your controller choice determines which DOIT VISION rental products are available. Here is the full compatibility matrix. On Matrix 500, Brompton Tessera is a separate receiving-card configuration — BOM, quote and lead time differ from the Novastar / Colorlight standard.
| Seria produktów | Brompton | NovaStar | Kolor światła |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matryca 500 P2.6 | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Matrix 500 P2.9 / P3.9 / P4.8 | Do | ✓ | ✓ |
| Seria X-1000 | Do | ✓ | Do |
| Seria Lite | Do | ✓ | ✓ |
| Seria Flex | Do | ✓ | ✓ |
If you standardise on Novastar, every DOIT VISION rental product is available. You can start with Lite Series for conference inventory, add Matrix 500 for touring, and later add X-1000 for festivals — all under one processor ecosystem, one software workflow, one operator training programme. This is the default setup we configure for rental companies building mixed inventories.
